ARGO-SARONIC ISLANDS

Spetsai

Martian Risk: slight in high season.

Spetsai is almost within earshot of the Argolid across the straits. Green and wooded, it has two ports, lots of restaurants (some rather good) and lovely sandy beaches in the west and south reached quickly by bus, hired scooter (no cars allowed) or a hike (with memorable views) over the spine of the island. The most notable beach is Anargyri in the middle of the south coast, whose wonderful long sands are backed by a few tavernas – don’t miss going to Tassos’s. Some years ago Spetsai saw a lot of Martians, but now that the mass operators have dropped their Athens charters the island has become Greek again – still busy in high season, but now with Athenians.

There are two harbours – the Dapia where the taxi boats to/from Kosta and Porto Cheli on the Argolid peninsula and the hydrofoils from Piraeus call; and the Old Harbour with its marina, waterfront restaurants and the island’s night life. All of which makes Spetsai a good choice for a [family] group of mixed ages and preferences. You can hire a car in Porto Cheli opposite and easily explore the mainland of the Argolid Peninsula. By regular catamarans you can make day trips to Hydra, Poros and Ermioni.
